Telavancin

What is Telavancin

Telavancin (Vibativ) is the first FDA-approved agent in the lipoglycopeptide class of antibiotics.

It is a semi-synthetic derivative of vancomycin with rapid concentration-dependent bactericidal action against selected gram-positive organisms, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

It is administered once daily, a potential advantage over some other antimicrobial agents with a similar spectrum of activity; however, it carries boxed warnings for use during pregnancy and in patients with preexisting renal insufficiency, as it has been associated with abnormal fetal development and worsening renal function/increased mortality.

Telavancin received FDA approval for treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible gram-positive bacteria in September 2009.

In June 2013, the FDA expanded the drugs approved indications to include use as a last line agent in the treatment of nosocomial pneumonia (hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated) caused by Staphylococcal aureus.
