What is Sodium Thiosulfate and Salicylic Acid medicine combination

Sodium thiosulfate 25% and salicylic acid 1% are used together in a prescription topical preparation for the treatment of tinea versicolor.

Tinea versicolor is a chronic fungal infection of the skin caused by Malassezia furfur. Sodium thiosulfate used topically retards the growth of fungus. Salicylic acid is added for its skin penetrating and keratolyic action.

Sulfur and salicylic acid topical preparations have long been included as potential alternatives for the topical treatment of the disease. Most patients are treated with topical agents alone. While sodium thiosulfate; salicylic acid is effective, recurrence is common after treatment.

Treatments of choice usually include selenium sulfide lotions or shampoos, azole antifungal topical preparations, or terbinafine topical preparations.

Oral antifungal regimens may lead to a lower recurrence rate but are usually reserved for patients with extensive disease or recurrent infections or infections failing topical treatments.
