Carbenicillin Brand Name– Geocillin

What is Carbenicillin

Carbenicillin is an oral, extended-spectrum penicillin. It was the first semisynthetic, extended-spectrum penicillin marketed.

At that time, carbenicillin had increased activity against aerobic gram-negative rods than did other available penicillins.

Since then, clinical use of carbenicillin has been replaced by other extended-spectrum penicillins such as mezlocillin and piperacillin, which are more effective against gram-negative organisms.

Parenteral carbenicillin is no longer available. Oral carbenicillin occasionally is used when an oral agent is needed for the treatment of Pseudomonas UTIs.

Carbenicillin was approved by the FDA in 1970.
