Ticarcillin

What is Ticarcillin

Ticarcillin is a parenteral, semisynthetic, extended-spectrum carboxypenicillin. Extended-spectrum penicillins are used mainly in the treatment of infections suspected or known to be caused by gram-negative bacteria and in combination with an aminoglycoside to treat systemic Pseudomonas infections.

Intravenous ticarcillin has replaced IV carbenicillin, which has a similar spectrum of activity but is less potent.

Ticarcillin is used in the treatment of intra-abdominal infections, respiratory and urinary tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, and other infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Ticarcillin was approved by the FDA in 1976.
