What is Carbetapentane Chlorpheniramine

NOTE: These products are discontinued in the U.S.

Carbetapentane chlorpheniramine is an antitussive-antihistamine combination product.

Carbetapentane and chlorpheniramine are used together in an oral preparation to relieve cough and histamine-mediated allergic symptoms, such as congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and watery, itchy eyes.

Specifically, this combination is indicated for the relief of such symptoms due to the common cold, bronchial asthma, and acute and chronic bronchitis.

Carbetapentane is a non-opioid, centrally acting cough suppressant.

Carbetapentane suppresses the cough reflex by direct action on the medullary cough center and also produces a drying effect on the respiratory mucus membranes.

Chlorpheniramine is a sedating antihistamine (H1-blocker) that dries nasal and sinus passages secondary to its anticholinergic activity.

Chlorpheniramine is similar in structure to brompheniramine, but is associated with less sedation.

Carbetapentane chlorpheniramine combination products are dosed twice daily and are available as oral tablets and liquids.
