What is Carbinoxamine
Carbinoxamine is an oral sedating antihistamine (H1-blocker) of the ethanolamine class that is similar in structure and effect to diphenhydramine. Carbinoxamine is used to relieve seasonal allergic rhinitis and to treat other allergic conditions.
Carbinoxamine is used in many combination prescription and non-prescription (OTC) allergy and cold products.
Carbinoxamine has been available since before 1938, prior to the modern FDA drug-approval process.
As part of an FDA initiative to ensure that all prescription and non-prescription medications are FDA-approved, manufacturers of non-approved carbinoxamine products (single and multi-ingredient) must submit an application showing safety and efficacy to continue distribution and sales.
Due to deaths reported in very young children and infants, the drug is contraindicated in pediatric patients 2 years of age and younger.
