What is Carbinoxamine Dextromethorphan Pseudoephedrine

NOTE: These products are discontinued in the U.S.

Carbinoxamine dextromethorphan pseudoephedrine are used together in an oral preparation to treat upper respiratory congestion and to relieve coughing associated with allergy or the common cold.

Carbinoxamine is a sedating antihistamine (H1-blocker) of the ethanolamine class. It dries the nasal and sinus passages secondary to its anticholinergic activity.

Dextromethorphan is a centrally acting cough suppressant used to inhibit dry, nonproductive coughs.

Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic agent that relieves nasal and sinus congestion and produces little or no rebound congestion, unlike topically applied sympathomimetics.

Carbinoxamine-containing products were marketed prior to the modern FDA drug-approval process. As part of an FDA initiative to ensure that all prescription and non-prescription medications are FDA-approved, manufacturers of non-approved carbinoxamine products (single and multi-ingredient) must submit an application showing safety and efficacy to continue distribution and sales.

Due to reports of death among young children and infants; these products are contraindicated in pediatric patients less than 2 years of age.
