Argatroban

Argatroban Brand Name– Argatroban

What is Argatroban

Argatroban is an intravenous direct thrombin inhibitor indicated for thrombosis prophylaxis or treatment in patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) and as an anticoagulant in patients with or at risk of HIT undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Guidelines recommend argatroban or bivalirudin over other nonheparin anticoagulants in patients with HIT who require PCI.

Unlike other nonheparin anticoagulants, argatroban is hepatically eliminated and can be used in patients with end-stage renal disease without dosage adjustment. In clinical trials, argatroban reduced the relative risk of death, new thrombosis, or other complications in patients with HIT.

Indications

  1. acute myocardial infarction
  2. coronary artery thrombosis prophylaxis
  3. deep venous thrombosis (DVT)
  4. deep venous thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis
  5. disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
  6. heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
  7. percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
  8. pulmonary embolism
  9. pulmonary embolism prophylaxis

For use as an anticoagulant in the treatment of thrombosis (i.e., deep venous thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism) or for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis (i.e., deep venous thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis, pulmonary embolism prophylaxis) in patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT)
