Acebutolol

Acebutolol Brand Name – Sectral

What is Acebutolol

Acebutolol is an oral cardioselective beta-adrenergic blocking agent. As with all ‘selective’ beta-blockers, selectivity for the beta-1-receptor is lost at high doses.

Acebutolol lipid solubility is low, which may reduce its likelihood of producing adverse central nervous system effects.

Acebutolol also has mild intrinsic sympathomimetic activity similar to that shown by pindolol and oxprenolol.

Although acebutolol has membrane-stabilizing effects on the action potential, these effects are less than that of propranolol.

Clinical uses of acebutolol include reduction of hypertension and control of ventricular arrhythmias.

The 2007 AHA guidelines for the management of hypertension state beta-blockers should not be used as first-line therapy for the treatment of hypertension, as several comparative clinical trials have shown beta blockers to be inferior to ACE inhibitors, angiotensin-receptor blockers, or calcium channel blockers for preventing both stroke and coronary artery disease complications.

These guidelines do, however, recommend the use of beta-blockers for the treatment of hypertension in patients with angina, prior myocardial infarction, or heart failure.

Acebutolol was approved by the FDA in 1984.
