What is motivational interviewing?
Motivational interviewing is a technique based on the Stages of Change Model developed initially to help patients with substance addiction address their ambivalence (mixed feelings) regarding their addiction and desire to quit.
It has since been applied to a variety of situations in which fostering the intrinsic (within the patient) motivation to change is the goal (such as improving patient compliance with treatments).
