Neuropathic pain

What is neuropathic pain?

Pain caused by neuronal dysfunction, nerve injury, or disease.

What are the common features of neuropathic pain?

There may be hyperalgesia, allodynia, hyperpathia, dysesthesia, or lancinating jolts of pain.

Nociceptive pain in the setting of sensitization may share some of these features.

However, nociceptive pain is unlikely to be lancinating or associated with an electric jolt-like nature.
