Spectinomycin

What is Spectinomycin

Spectinomycin is an intramuscular aminocyclitol antibiotic produced by Streptomyces spectabilis, a soil microorganism. It is used clinically as an alternative therapy for the treatment of acute gonorrheal urethritis in males and acute gonorrheal cervicitis and proctitis in females.

Spectinomycin should not be used to treat pharyngeal gonorrhea due to the high rate of failure. Spectinomycin was approved by the FDA in 1971.
