Mequinol and Tretinoin

Mequinol and Tretinoin Brand Name– Solage

What is Mequinol and Tretinoin

Mequinol and tretinoin (all- trans retinoic acid) are used together in a topical preparation to lighten the appearance of solar lentigines.

Solar lentigines (also known as age spots or ‘liver spots’) are macular, non-malignant, pigmented lesions induced by chronic sun exposure.

Two studies of the efficacy and safety of mequinol-tretinoin for the treatment of solar lentigines and related hyperpigmented lesions, demonstrated that the combination solution was superior to either active component alone.

With proper control of sun exposure, the use of mequinol-tretinoin topical solution will improve the color of the treated solar lentigines in roughly 54% of patients. Only 1% of treated patients will observe clearing of their lesions.

Mequinol and tretinoin combinations do not permanently cure skin hyperpigmentation.

Once mequinol-tretinoin is discontinued, repigmentation will occur in the affected areas. In an open label study conducted in 259 ethnic patients with skin types II to V (Asian (24.3%), Hispanic/Latino (62.2%) and African American (13.5%)), the overall safety and efficacy profile of twice daily applications of Solage® for 24 weeks was generally consistent with previous findings in Caucasian patients.

Solage(R) (pronounced so-la-JAY) was granted FDA approval for the treatment of solar lentigines on December 10, 1999.
