What is Clindamycin Tretinoin
Clindamycin and tretinoin are combined in an alcohol-free hydrogel and used topically to treat acne vulgaris.
Clindamycin is an antibacterial agent with activity against the organism Propionibacterium acnes, which is believed to be the primary causative organism of acne vulgaris.
Tretinoin, also known as all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA), is a naturally occurring retinoid and is a derivative of vitamin A (retinol).
Retinoids are important regulators of cell reproduction, and cell proliferation and differentiation. In treating acne, tretinoin normalizes desquamation of the follicular epithelium and reduces the number of comedones and inflammatory lesions.
Tretinoin also enhances the penetration of antibiotics used in combination with it.
The combination of clindamycin; tretinoin is more effective than either agent alone in treating acne vulgaris and is effective in treating both inflammatory and noninflammatory lesions.
Studies comparing clindamycin; tretinoin with other therapies (e.g., benzoyl peroxide; clindamycin) are not yet available. Prior to development of the combination product, each agent was administered separately resulting in compliance issues.
Because bacterial resistance of P. acnes to clindamycin is increasing, it is not recommended to use clindamycin alone for the treatment of acne.
Clindamycin tretinoin topical gel was originally approved in November 2006 for treatment of acne vulgaris.
