What is Chlorpheniramine

Chlorpheniramine is a first generation, oral sedating antihistamine (H1-blocker) of the alkylamine class.

In contrast to first generation antihistamines from the ethanolamine class, such as diphenhydramine, the alkylamine antihistamines, such as chlorpheniramine, are considered less sedating and have less anticholinergic effects. However, these effects are still substantial for some patients compared to newer, non-sedating antihistamines.

Chlorpheniramine is used to relieve seasonal allergic rhinitis and to treat other allergic conditions.

Chlorpheniramine was originally marketed as a prescription-only drug in 1950 and was later moved to non-prescription (OTC) status.
