What is Carteolol

Carteolol is a long-acting, nonselective, beta-adrenergic antagonist. It has been used orally for the treatment of hypertension; oral carteolol tablets are no longer commercially available in the US.

Carteolol is currently available as an ophthalmic agent applied topically for the treatment of chronic open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Carteolol can be administered alone or in combination with other antiglaucomatous agents. The drug has low lipid solubility and moderate intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA).

Beta-adrenergic antagonists with ISA theoretically have a reduced risk of bronchospasm, heart failure, and peripheral vasoconstriction.

The FDA approved carteolol in December 1988.
