What is Abacavir Lamivudine Zidovudine

Abacavir Lamivudine Zidovudine is a combination of three nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), approved for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

Triple NRTI therapy is not considered highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Use of a triple NRTI regimen was initially developed to preserve both protease inhibitors (PIs) and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) for later use.

However, study A5095 with the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) found that in antiretroviral treatment-naive patients, treatment with Trizivir alone was inferior to 2 other efavirenz containing treatment regimens (Trizivir plus efavirenz and Combivir (lamivudine, 3TC; zidovudine, ZDV combination tablet) plus efavirenz).

The recommendation for use of Trizivir in HIV infection was based on analysis of surrogate markers in controlled studies of abacavir in combination with lamivudine and zidovudine.

Trizivir received FDA approval in November 2000. In July 2006, a co-packaged product containing lamivudine; zidovudine tablets and abacavir tablets was approved by the FDA.
