Ultrasound appearance of adenomyomatosis
Gallbladder adenomyomatosis is a benign condition consisting of dilation of the Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses in the gallbladder wall with associated smooth muscle proliferation. There is resultant thickening of and cystic space formation in the gallbladder wall.
This process can be focal or diffuse, and the sonographic appearance includes thickening of the gallbladder wall with cystic spaces, and more characteristically tiny echogenic foci in the gallbladder wall with dirty ring down (“comet tail”) artifact
