Significance of gallbladder wall calcification
Calcification of the gallbladder wall is referred to as porcelain gallbladder . It is a rare entity with an unknown etiology but is associated with gallstone disease, female gender, and age >60 years. There is also a higher incidence of gallbladder carcinoma with a porcelain gallbladder such that prophylactic removal of the gallbladder is commonly recommended. On US, wall calcification appears as a hyperechoic wall with variable posterior acoustic shadowing.
