Role of kidney transplantation in Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis
What is the role of kidney transplantation in the treatment of patients with Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis?
Kidney transplantation is a viable treatment for patients with Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis who progress to ESKD.
However, there is a variable risk of recurrent disease in both primary and secondary categories of disease. In patients with primary Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, the recurrence rate is approximately 20% to 40% in those with type I and III disease and up to 80% to 90% in those with type II (DDD).
In those with secondary disease, the recurrence is directly linked to control of the underlying illness.
The risk of recurrent disease may be marginally higher in recipients of living-donor kidneys. Recurrent disease usually leads to allograft loss.
