Role of anticoagulation in Membranous Nephropathy
Is anticoagulation recommended for patients with Membranous Nephropathy?
Patients with severe nephrotic syndrome are at increased risk for thromboembolic complications, and this risk tends to be higher in patients with MN for unclear reasons.
Although no consensus has emerged regarding whether prophylactic anticoagulation should be used, a decision analysis tool is now available that helps estimate the benefit from prophylactic anticoagulation based on serum albumin and taking into account the risk of bleeding.
Some recommend anticoagulation in patients with MN who are severely nephrotic (proteinuria >10 g/day and serum albumin <2.5 g/day) unless there are contraindications.
