Plantar fibromatosis

What is plantar fibromatosis?

Plantar fibromatosis is a benign fibrous proliferation of the plantar fascia, which occurs in all age groups and is bilateral in up to one third of cases. On MRI, there is nodular thickening of the plantar fascia that occurs in the medial or midportion of the fascia. T1-weighted and T2-weighted images typically demonstrate signal intensity that is equal to or slightly greater than that of skeletal muscle. Classically, there is avid postcontrast enhancement. This diagnosis can usually be made with confidence given the typical location, morphology, and signal intensity characteristics.
