Pathological significance of different forms of tau
Do the different forms of tau have pathological significance?
- Phosphorylation: some pathological forms of tau are hyperphosphorylated, which is thought to dislodge tau from microtubules and contribute to its aggregation.
- Microtubule binding repeat number: due to alternative splicing and the inclusion or exclusion of exon 10, all isoforms of tau have either 4 or 3 microtubule binding repeats.
