Variant of unknown significance (VUS)

Variant of unknown significance (VUS)

A VUS is an alteration in the normal or reference sequence of a gene that has no known effect on the gene function or no known association with disease risk.

The significance of a VUS is unclear until additional studies clarify its biologic significance in a sufficiently large population.

Gene sequencing studies such as whole exome sequencing often identify numerous allelic variants in many genes.
