Foreign bodies can be organic or inorganic material. Plant thorns, wood splinters, sea shell fragments, and sea urchin spines are the most common. Other recognized materials include fish bones, chitin fragments, stones, gravel, brick fragments, lead, glass, fiberglass, plastic, and rubber. Surgically implanted materials include metallic fragments, cement (methylmethacrylate), and silicone (silicone synovitis).
