Do individuals with a first degree relative diagnosed with adenomatous polyps require earlier screening for CRC

Do individuals with a first degree relative diagnosed with adenomatous polyps require earlier screening for CRC? Do they have an increased risk for CRC?

  • Yes. Persons with a first-degree relative diagnosed with advanced (high-risk adenoma [HRA]) adenomas (an adenoma ≥ cm in size, or with HGD, or with villous elements) before the age of 50 should begin CRC screening at the age of 40 or 10 years younger than the affected relative.
  • A first-degree relative with adenomatous polyps increases an individual’s risk for CRC by two- to fourfold.
