What is Secukinumab
Secukinumab is a subcutaneously administered human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that selectively binds to the interleukin-17A (IL-17A) cytokine, inhibiting its interaction with the IL-17A receptor.
Maintenance dosing is given once monthly. Secukinumab is useful in a variety of inflammatory disorders.
Elevated concentrations of IL-17A are found in psoriatic plaques; secukinumab is approved for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy; clinical trials included patients naive to treatment and patients who had not responded adequately to nonbiologic therapies or other biologic treatments.
Secukinumab is also indicated for active psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in adults. In adults with PsA, the drug improves clinical signs and symptoms, inhibits the radiographic progression of structural joint damage, and improves physical function.
