What is Potassium Citrate

Potassium citrate is an alkalinizing agent which is used to treat some nephrolithiasis conditions by raising urinary pH and citrate concentrations.

Oral administration of potassium citrate reduces the potential crystallization of stone-forming salts in the urine (calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, and uric acid).

Potassium citrate extended-release tablets are specifically indicated for the management of renal tubular acidosis (RTA) with calcium stones, hypocitraturic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis of any etiology, and uric acid lithiasis with or without calcium stones.

Potassium salts such as potassium citrate may be used as a supplement to maintain potassium homeostasis; however, potassium chloride is usually the salt of choice (see Potassium Salts monograph) for potassium supplementation.

Potassium citrate extended-release tablets (Urocit®-K) were approved by the FDA in 1985.
