What is Methenamine Sodium Acid Phosphate

Methenamine sodium acid phosphate are used together in an oral preparation for suppression or elimination of bacteriuria associated with chronic and recurrent urinary tract infections.

Methenamine mandelate is an antiinfective agent. Sodium acid phosphate is used to acidify the urine. An acidic urine is required to hydrolyze methenamine to ammonia and formaldehyde, which produces the bactericidal activity.

These products have been available on the market since before 1962, which is when Congress passed the amended Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requiring that the FDA establish both safety and efficacy for all subsequently approved drugs.

Thus, these products are unapproved marketed drugs that have not been formally evaluated by the FDA for clinical safety and efficacy.
