What medications are available for treatment of neuropathic pain?
Antiepileptics, antidepressants, and opioids have all demonstrated efficacy in treatment of neuropathic pain. Various professional societies and academic groups have published recommendations for different types of neuropathic disorders based on the literature. For example, the American Academy of Neurology recommends pregabalin as first-line treatment for DPN, with duloxetine, tricyclic antidepressants, and gabapentin being second-line agents, and opioids third. Unfortunately, data suggest that half of patients will only obtain partial relief. In practice, drug rotations and trialing of additional agents (rational polypharmacy) is very common to obtain satisfactory pain relief
