What is Magnesium Hydroxide

Magnesium hydroxide is also known as milk of magnesia. It is a relatively nonabsorbable cation and is considered a saline laxative.

Magnesium hydroxide is used primarily as a laxative for occasional constipation in adult and pediatric patients 2 years of age and older. Non-prescription products are labeled for laxative use.

However, it can also be used as an antacid, particularly in combination with other antacids.

Magnesium hydroxide is often combined with an aluminum or calcium salt in combination antacid products (see separate monographs for combination agents). Patients with renal disease or on a magnesium-restricted diet should not take these products.

Milk of Magnesia has been used clinically in commercial products since 1939.
