What is Lidocaine Prilocaine

The combination of lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2.5% provides two amide local anesthetics for topical administration.

EMLA®, an acronym for Eutectic Mixture of Local Anesthetics, is an emulsion and is available as a cream. The cream must be covered by an occlusive dressing (e.g., Saran Wrap®, Band-Aid®, Tegaderm®, or DuoDerm®).

The lidocaine; prilocaine combination is also available as a microemulsion for dental use.

The microemulsion contains poloxamer excipients and is a fluid at room temperature and an elastic gel when applied to the periodontal pocket. The FDA approved the EMLA® cream in December 1992 and the Oraqix® periodontal gel in December 2003.

The EMLA® anesthetic disc was approved in February 1998 but was removed from the U.S. market in February 2005.
