What is Lactic acid Citric acid Potassium bitartrate
Lactic acid citric acid, potassium bitartrate are used in combination as a non-hormonal vaginal contraceptive gel.
The gel is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in females of reproductive potential for use as an ‘on-demand’ method of contraception, prior to sexual intercourse. This gel is not effective for the prevention of pregnancy when administered after intercourse.
The estmated efficacy rate is 86% in women who use the gel as “typical-use”, defined as cycles with inconsistent or incorrect use and sexual intercourse occurring at least once per month.
In women who use the gel as “perfect-use”, defined as following the directions exactly and consistently with no additional methods of contraception, and sexual intercourse reported at least once per month, the efficacy rate is 98.7%.
The gel does not protect against the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or the transmission of any sexually-transmitted disease, including gonorrhea or chlamydia.
The FDA approved this contraceptive gel in May 2020.
