What is Chlorpheniramine Dextromethorphan

Chlorpheniramine dextromethorphan are used together in non-prescription combination products indicated for the temporary relief of cough, rhinorrhea, and sneezing associated with the common cold and for treating allergic rhinitis or other upper respiratory allergies.

Chlorpheniramine is a sedating antihistamine (H1-blocker) of the alkylamine class commonly used for treating symptoms related to histamine release and to dry the nasal and sinus passages secondary to its anticholinergic activity.

Dextromethorphan is a non-opioid antitussive related to the opiate agonists that is effective in inhibiting dry, nonproductive coughs, and is not intended to treat coughs associated with excessive mucus production such as may occur with smoking, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis.

Non-prescription antihistamine-dextromethorphan products nationwide in the U.S. have reportedly become drugs of abuse, particularly by teenagers and prepubescent older children.

Some chlorpheniramine; dextromethorphan products are known by by the slang name “Triple C” by those who abuse the products due to the dextromethorphan content; abuse of the product may cause serious intoxications.
