What is Brompheniramine Carbetapentane Phenylephrine

NOTE: These products are discontinued in the U.S.

Brompheniramine carbetapentane phenylephrine are used together for the relief of cough, nasal congestion, and rhinorrhea associated with the common cold, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and other upper respiratory tract conditions.

Brompheniramine is a first generation, sedating antihistamine (H1-blocker) of the propylamine class commonly used for treating symptoms related to histamine release such as rhinorrhea.

Antihistamines from the propylamine group generally have a more potent antihistamine effect and less sedation and antiemetic effects than antihistamines from the ethanolamine group (e.g., diphenhydramine).

Carbetapentane is a non-opioid, centrally-acting cough suppressant. The cough suppressant effect of carbetapentane is less potent than opiates; however, unlike opiates, carbetapentane has not been associated with substance abuse.

Phenylephrine is a sympathomimetic amine used as a decongestant to decrease nasal and sinus congestion.

Phenylephrine appears to have a lower propensity to cause hypertension and potential sequelae (e.g., stroke, hypertensive crisis, intracranial bleeding) than ephedrine or phenylpropanolamine.

Brompheniramine arbetapentane phenylephrine is available by prescription in formulations for adults and children.
