Calcium Carbonate Risedronate Brand Name– Actonel with Calcium

What is Calcium Carbonate Risedronate

Calcium Carbonate Risedronate is a co-packaged product of once weekly risedronate (35 mg/week) and once daily calcium carbonate (1250 mg/day, equivalent to 500 mg/day elemental calcium) for the remaining 6 days of the week.

The product is used to increase bone mass to treat or prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Risedronate is a potent oral second-generation pyridinyl bisphosphonate; it differs structurally from other available bisphosphonates due to the pyridinyl side chain shielding the active amino group.

Treatment with risedronate is associated with significant increases in bone mineral density (BMD) and reduces the risk for radiographic vertebral and non-vertebral fractures (e.g., hip fractures).

Bisphosphonates such as risedronate are generally considered to be first-line therapy for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

For osteoporosis prevention, the second and third-generation bisphosphonates appear to offer similar benefits across the class to increase bone mineral density; the balance of costs, benefits, and harms of treating osteopenic patients with bisphosphonates is most favorable when the estimated risk for fracture is high.

As with other bisphosphonate products, supplements of vitamin D are recommended if dietary intake is inadequate and some patients may need additional calcium to provide adequate intake for their condition(s).

The risedronate with calcium product was initially approved by the FDA in 2005.
