What is Calcium Acetate

Calcium acetate is a calcium salt used as a phosphate binder for the reduction of serum phosphorus in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

When dietary phosphate restriction is inadequate to control phosphorus levels, administration of phosphate binders is necessary. Guidelines recommend that the serum calcium-phosphate product be maintained at less than 55 mg2/dL2 in patients with CKD.

Calcium acetate lowers serum phosphate concentrations similarly to calcium carbonate; however, calcium acetate contains less elemental calcium and hypercalcemia has been noted less frequently with calcium acetate.

Similar phosphorus level control has been observed with calcium acetate and sevelamer.

Phosphate binding with calcium acetate is also similar to that of aluminum hydroxide.

Disadvantages of calcium acetate as a phosphate binder include hypercalcemia, extraskeletal calcification, and gastrointestinal side effects.

Indications

  • hyperphosphatemia
  • Each tablet or capsule or 5 mL of oral solution contains 667 mg calcium acetate which is equivalent to 169 mg (8.45 mEq) calcium ion.

For the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic renal failure or end stage renal disease
