Alfuzosin

Alfuzosin Brand Name– Uroxatral

What is Alfuzosin

Alfuzosin is a short-acting, selective alpha-1 receptor antagonist. It is used for the symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in adult males and is most similar to prazosin, another short-acting alpha-1 blocker.

Meta-analyses have shown alfuzosin, doxazosin, tamsulosin, and terazosin to be comparable in the treatment of BPH; however, clinical uroselectivity may differ. Similar to tamsulosin, alfuzosin appears to be more specific for alpha-1a receptors than other alpha-blockers.

Alfuzosin has a low incidence of hypotension and sexual dysfunction at doses that are therapeutic for BPH. In one study, alfuzosin improved BPH symptoms progressively during 12 months of administration.

Alfuzosin was approved by the FDA in 2003.
