What should be done if IVU suggests the presence of a renal mass?
It is difficult to distinguish whether a renal mass seen on IVU represents a benign renal cyst (an extremely common occurrence in patients >50 years old) or a malignancy such as renal cell carcinoma. Any renal masses detected on IVU should be evaluated further with cross-sectional imaging techniques such as renal ultrasonography (US), renal CT, or renal MRI.
