Which study would be best to look for a kidney cancer?
When looking for a primary renal tumor, CT and MRI are equivalent in detecting small masses and are usually performed with a “renal mass protocol” that involves obtaining images through the kidneys prior to the administration of contrast material as well as during the nephrographic phase following intravenous contrast administration to detect renal tumors. Evaluation of the urothelium is critical only in patients with a history of urothelial tumors, in which case a CTU is performed.
