What is hyperphosphatemia?

Hyperphosphatemia is defined by a serum phosphate level greater than 1.45 mmol/L or 4.5 mg/dL. In patients on dialysis, a looser standard of 5.5 mg/dL (1.77 mmol/L) is sometimes adopted.
