Why do patients with SCN develop hyperphosphatemia?
• Release of intracellular phosphate from acute hemolysis or rhabdomyolysis.
• Proximal tubular hyperfunctioning with increased reabsorption of phosphate via sodium phosphate cotransporters in early disease.
• Reduced filtration of phosphate in advanced kidney disease.
