What is the role of magnesium in asthma?
There is a role for IV magnesium in status asthmaticus. A Cochrane meta-analysis revealed that magnesium is beneficial in patients with severe asthma exacerbations, resulting in reduced admissions and improved lung function. Typical protocols call for a rapid infusion of 1.2 to 2 g over a 15 to 30 minutes period.
