Is there an association between hypomagnesemia and diabetes?
Magnesium has been linked to glycemic control in diabetic patients. Hypomagnesemia is common in patients with diabetes, occurring in 13% to 47% of diabetic, nonhospitalized patients. Magnesium tends to go down as glycemic control worsens. Hypomagnesemia has been linked to reduced insulin sensitivity, and supplementing magnesium in type 2 diabetic patients has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic control. No major diabetic institutions have made any recommendations for chronic or routine magnesium supplementation in diabetic patients.
