Role for ultrasound in the diagnosis of Cardiorenal syndrome type 3

Kidney size and echogenicity are the primary features that distinguish acute from chronic kidney damage.

Of note, enlarged kidneys can be seen in some forms of CKD (e.g., early stages of diabetic nephropathy, HIV-related glomerulonephritis, or cast nephropathy).

A hyperechogenic kidney cortex with low corticomedullary ratio is predictive of CKD.

The echocardiographic pattern is not diagnostic of CRS-3.

It may show increased atrial volumes or areas as indices of volume overload, pleural or pericardial effusions.
