Oxygen toxicity
- Acute neurotoxicity as a result of breathing oxygen at pressure exceeding 1.6 atm during diving
- Threshold for oxygen toxicity is higher during resting, dry exposure in hyperbaric oxygen therapy
- Presentation can be similar to nitrogen narcosis, with behavior changes and disorientation; auditory and visual hallucinations are also frequently reported
- Unlike with nitrogen narcosis, may present with nausea, facial muscle twitching, convulsions, and loss of consciousness
- Differentiate on basis of symptoms, particularly the presence of convulsions that terminate upon cessation of oxygen inhalation
