What are some of the medications that cause hypocalcemia and how?
Many medications can cause hypocalcemia through a variety of mechanisms:
• Calcium chelators: citrate, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)
• Complex formation: foscarnet
• Inhibition of bone resorption: bisphosphonates, denosumab, etc.
• Drug-induced hypoparathyroidism: cinacalcet
• Altered vitamin D metabolism: phenytoin, 5 fluorouracil/leucovorin
