Major CT and MRI features of vascular traumatic injury
CT and MRI findings of vascular injury include an abrupt caliber change of a vessel (indicative of contained rupture or pseudoaneurysm formation); an intimal flap within an arterial vessel; lack of luminal enhancement and enlargement of vessel caliber owing to acute thrombosis; active extravasation of intravenous contrast material owing to active bleeding; high attenuation/intermediate-high T1-weighted signal intensity hemorrhage within the wall of a vessel (intramural hematoma) or surrounding a vessel; wall thickening, sometimes with an irregular contour; and secondary signs of solid organ infarction or bowel ischemia/infarction, as previously described.
