Kummel disease

What is Kummel disease?

Kummel disease is the name for vertebral body collapse due to avascular necrosis caused by preceding trauma. The collapse is delayed and typically occurs approximately 2 weeks after the trauma. On imaging, vertebral body collapse is in association with either an intravertebral vacuum cleft of gas, which has very low density on radiography, very low attenuation on CT, and very low signal intensity on MRI, and/or an intravertebral focus of fluid which has low T1-weighted and high T2-weighted signal intensity on MRI similar to that of other fluid in the body.
