Is venous thromboembolism a concern in ANCA
Is venous thromboembolism (VTE; deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolus) a concern in patients with ANCA disease?
Venous thrombosis is an increasingly recognized complication of ANCA vasculitis.
A higher rate of events has been reported in both PR3- and MPO-ANCA disease, with about 10% of patients developing symptomatic VTE and an incidence of approximately 7 events/100-person years.
VTE events appear to occur more frequently at time of active disease.
The pathogenesis of VTE in this population remains unclear, but there is speculation that ANCA disease may induce endothelial damage and hypercoagulability.
